30 Day Pledge for Beauty as I AM - #Pouronthelove

There are things that happen in our lives that touch us in unexpected ways.  Things that move us, and cause us to feel the impact of the struggle, hurt and pain people are going through.  This has happened many times in my life but just yesterday I felt something I could not ignore.  I was reminded through a series of events of the intense range of experiences people, especially women and girls in our society, go through about how they feel about their bodies.  I recognize the reason this touches me so is because of the difficulties I went through growing up not liking how I looked and wanting to be different.

The dominant images of beauty in the culture I grew up in were of women who were blonde with narrow features and straight or wavy hair.  I was made fun of and ridiculed for my full lips, wider nose, large eyes and curly, frizzy hair.  I so wanted to fit in.  I did all kinds of things to look like those beauty images and it never worked.  But I did my best to not let it get to me, and to be happy with who I was.

Who knew decades later people would pay for curls that looked like mine, pay to make their lips and hips look bigger, and change the color of their skin.  Fortunately before all the happened, I learned that beauty comes in all colors, shapes and forms.  I learned the more I loved what God gave me, the more beautiful I became.  I also learned how fickle our beauty culture is.

Maybe for you it was how tall or short you were, or it was your acne, or your eyes or ears, or maybe you had freckles, or you were skinny, or round.  Kids can be brutal and those experiences can stay with us and continue on into our adult life.  And as we've seen in social media and even face to face, adults can be even more brutal.

Unfortunately, today that struggle for girls and women, and more and more boys and men, has only increased.  We see the numbers rise in people who have anxiety, eating disorders and self loathing.

I feel their sadness and when I think about it hurts, so much so that I feel moved to do something more than the attention I bring to this issue with my blogs and social media postings.

I know that my power, and your power, to change things is to focus on what we want.  Therefore, my focus, and I hope you'll join me, is to pledge for the next 30 days to send out positive energy that focuses on the beauty in all of us by posting positive quotes and messages every day on social media.  I'm asking you to join me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter by liking, sharing, and retweeting, the posts, and if you're moved to do so, posting your own positive messages around promoting beauty in all it's diversity.  Let's #pouronthelove!  Please use the hashtag and let's create our own movement to heal, love and uplift.

Remember we were all created by the same energy that created nature.  In nature there is an abundant diversity of flowers, birds, trees, animals, and fish that are all beautiful.  We were created with that same diverse beauty.  Let's honor the beauty in all of us.

Dr. Wayne Dyer said, "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change."  Let's empower ourselves and others by looking for the beauty we all possess.  In doing so, we will change the way we see ourselves and the way we see each other!  The energy of thoughts like that can change the world!

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.               Margaret Mead
